Obituary of Edith I. Benson
Edith Benson,
96, longtime resident of Bruceton Mills, and for the last ten years at Heritage Point in Morgantown, died December 1, 2017. In October, 2017, she began living with family in Kingwood and Morgantown due to her failing health.
Edith was born March 8, 1921, in Vanceburg, Kentucky and was the daughter of the late Frank and Kate Stevenson. She was predeceased by her husband of sixty years, Robert T. Benson, as well as a son Kenneth Benson, and a daughter Mary Benson. She was the last surviving member of her immediate Stevenson family.
As a devoted, loving mother of six children, Edith worked tirelessly to meet their needs and provide opportunities for them to pursue their interests and education. She led by example as she taught love of church and family, responsibility, resilience, how to lend a hand to others, importance of strong work ethic, as well as how to show support, dignity, and respect of all persons.
Anyone who knew Edith can tell of her deep love for children; she always enjoyed having them in her midst. Whether she was with her grandchildren, great grandchildren, or the toddlers in the Sunday School class she taught for over 30 years, her joy when she was with them was indeed heartwarming.
Edith was a 65-year member of the Bruceton United Methodist Church where she was very active with the women's group. She was always willing to lend a helping hand to support the church and people she dearly loved.
Before each wedding of her nine grandchildren, there was great anticipation of what the wedding-present quilt would look like. She made beautiful quilts for all of them as well as crib quilts for all twenty great grandchildren, and multiple quilts for her children. Another hobby Edith enjoyed, was doll-making and she once said this interest evolved to please her grandchildren.
Edith is survived by three sons, Delbert Benson (Linda), Bradenton, FL; Stephen Benson (Mary Rae), Bruceton Mills; Dean Benson (Suzann), Kingwood; one daughter Janice Christopher (Wendell), Morgantown; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
Family and friends may call at the Carl R. Spear Funeral Home in Brandonville-Bruceton Mills, WV, Monday, from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m., and Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at the Bruceton United Methodist Church from 10 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. service with Rev.
